Athlete training
What is this tool?
Athlete training lets you build training sessions outside matches imported from ShootingHouse. You define simple stages (paper targets, steel, shots per target), add athletes for that day and log multiple runs per person on each stage.
Use it to compare progress on the same drill, note conditions (ammo, weather) and analyze hit factor, projected A time and charts across repetitions. It does not replace official match scoring or PractiScore.
Access and sign-in
- Entry: IPSC Tools → Athlete training card, or
/training. - Creating sessions and logging runs requires a signed-in user (any active portal account — admin not required).
- When not signed in, you see an intro page at
/training; after sign-in you go to your training list (?next=/training...).
Step by step
- Create session — name, date, projected A mode (fixed time or best on stage) and general notes (optional).
- Add stages — paper targets, shots per target, steel, no-shoot flag.
- Add athletes — linked to this session only; in best-on-stage mode, set each athlete's IPSC factor.
- Score on a stage → pick the athlete → fill the grid, time and run notes → Save.
- History / chart on the stage → athlete progress charts (from 2 runs onward).
- Compare runs — pick the stage and two runs (same or different athletes) for side-by-side charts.
Session notes
Besides each run note (up to 500 characters), the whole session accepts general notes (up to 2000 characters): location, weather, day goal, gear, etc. Edit when creating or in the card after athletes, with Save notes.
Configure a stage
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Name | Stage label within the session |
| Paper targets | Number of numbered targets in the grid |
| Shots per target | Hit limit per target (A+C+D+M+NS total) |
| Steel | Steel row: A and M columns |
| No-shoot | Enables NS column on paper targets |
Edit stage is only allowed when no runs exist on that stage.
Projected A time modes
Each session has a projection mode (default: fixed time). Choose when creating or in the Projected A mode card on the session page. The icon next to the selector shows the full formula.
Fixed time
Fixed penalty per hit, regardless of hit factor.
Added time: C×0.33 s + D×0.66 s + M×2.48 s + NS×1.65 s + PROC×1.65 s
Projected A time = real time + added time
M, NS and PROC use the same ratio as C (2 pts = 0.33 s).
Best on stage
Reference HF = best HF among runs on the stage.
1 point lost = 1 ÷ HF seconds.
Added time (minor factor): C×2/HF + D×4/HF + M×15/HF + NS×10/HF + PROC×10/HF
Major factor: C = 1 pt, D = 3 pts per hit. Set each athlete's IPSC factor on their card.
When you change mode or athlete factor, session runs are recalculated. In history, the Point value panel appears in best-on-stage mode.
Log a run
- Tap +1; at the limit (e.g. 2 shots: 1→2), another tap resets to 0. Long-press a cell = 0 immediately.
- Per target: A+C+D+M ≤ shots (e.g. 1A+1M, 2M); NS ≤ shots separately (e.g. 2M+2NS).
- M = −15 pts, NS = −10 pts, PROC = −10 pts on the real total (each occurrence).
- Steel starts as A; tap M for a miss (−15 pts on real score).
- Time in seconds — comma or dot accepted.
- Procedurals (count) and optional run note (up to 500 characters).
Summary metrics
| Metric | How it is calculated |
|---|---|
| Hit factor | max(0, raw − M×15 − NS×10 − PROC×10) ÷ time; raw per athlete IPSC factor (default: A×5 + C×3 + D×1 + Steel×5) |
| Added time | Per projection mode — see Projected A time modes section |
| Projected A time | Real time + added time |
| Projected HF | (A+C+D+M+steel as A)×5 ÷ projected A time; NS and PROC excluded |
BLE timer — Special Pie and Shooters Global
Optionally enable the BLE timer on the training session to connect a shot timer over Bluetooth — in the browser or in the Android app: Special Pie SP M1A2 or Shooters Global SG Timer, with the model identified on its own when it connects. On run entry, the time is filled in automatically and the per-shot splits are shown and saved with the run.
- Configure — on the session page, BLE timer card → Configure timer → enable Use BLE timer in this session and save.
- Pair — click the link icon next to the status. Chrome opens the Bluetooth device picker; choose your timer. Connection is not automatic — you pair when you want to.
- Shooters Global: turn pairing mode on first — it uses secure pairing. On the SG Timer and SG Pulse Pro: Settings → Bluetooth → Pairing mode → On; on the SG Timer GO and SG Pulse, hold the power button until the Bluetooth icon blinks. From then on you have 60 seconds to finish, confirming on both sides. The SG Timer remembers up to 8 devices; the SG Timer GO keeps only one. The Special Pie has no such step. The timer must also be in an RO session to stream shots.
- Log run — with the timer connected, each shot or stop updates the time field; splits appear below the time on the scoring screen.
- History — when you save, splits are stored on the run. In the athlete history on a stage, the Shot-by-shot splits chart shows the gap to the best run with timer (a bar per shot and a running line, one color per run, switchable reference), the elapsed-time line and the draw (first shot) of each run. Light or dark background.
- Draft — time, grid, splits, procedurals and note are kept in browser
localStorageper athlete/stage until you save; if you reload before saving, data is restored. - Video — the history Publish video button opens the video editor on the session, athlete and stage; each run’s Video button opens that run, with the score card.

With two or more runs by the same athlete on a stage, time and hit factor charts appear (real vs. projected). In Compare runs, pick a stage then two runs (same or different athletes) for points, time and HF charts for those executions.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to import a match?
No. Training is independent of ShootingHouse matches.
Why can't I edit the stage?
Once runs are logged, configuration is locked to preserve history.
Is HF the same as in a match?
No. Training metrics use fixed simplified rules to compare repetitions on the same stage.
Does the timer connect automatically?
No. Click the link icon to open Chrome's picker and pair manually.
Lost data after reload before save?
Time, grid, splits and note are kept as a browser draft per athlete and stage until you save the run.
